On a very cold January day, eight members of the Hanceville Fire/Rescue Squad had a big breakfast at "Sally's" and lots of hot coffee before plunging into the waters of Vortex Springs, Florida. The thermometer said 41, but with the windchill factor, it was right at freezing. Six of their members received their Openwater Certification later this day. Pictured here from left to right, are Divemaster Terry Briscoe, Assistant Divemaster Tom Sanders, Chris Chafin, Instructor Phil Hutchens, Shane Hammond, Kenny Taylor, Jonathan Moody, Tony (Curly) Barbee, Jeremy Barbee, David Sandlin, and Fire Chief Oneal Swann.

Tom Sanders looks on as Tony Barbee and Jonathan Moody assemble their gear at Vortex Springs. In the background, a few others members of the squad discuss with Fire Chief Oneal Swann whether or not you can actually go SCUBA diving wearing a coat and a toboggan! |
Tony Barbee was always alert during class! Actually this was at the end of a very, very long day. |
